NFL week 8 roundup
Sunday 26th October 2008 Baltimore Ravens (4-3) 29-10 Oakland Raiders (2-5) Baltimore maintain a good record after a comfortable victory over the Oakland Raiders. The Ravens defence owned Oakland in this game and opened the scoring when Jameel McClain sacked JaMarcus Russell in the endzone for a safety. Whilst their offence didn’t get anything going, their defence didn’t stop much either as Demetrius Williams was left wide open for a 70 yard touchdown catch from Joe Flacco. Joe Flacco also had a reception of his own following a 43 yard pass from backup quarterback Troy Smith whilst in the “Wildcat” formation often-used by the Miami Dolphins this season. Only a loss of balance and stumbling to the ground prevented Flacco from making it to the endzone. Flacco later added a touchdown on the ground. Baltimore’s defence held Oakland to just 47 rushing yards.
Carolina Panthers (6-2) 27-23 Arizona Cardinals (4-3) Carolina came back from a 17-3 deficit during the third quarter to defeat Arizona. Kurt Warner put up big numbers but his interception in the final quarter prevented any Arizona comeback. He completed 35/49 for 381 yards with 2 touchdowns and that interception. Both of those touchdowns went to Anquan Boldin who caught 9 passes for 63 yards on his return since fracturing his paranasal sinuses in a 56-35 loss to the Jets in week 4. Steve Breaston caught 9 passes for 91 yards in this game and Larry Fitzgerald outgained him with 115 yards on 7 receptions. Jake Delhomme had a good game too as Panthers quarterback, completing 20/28 for 248 yards and 2 touchdowns, although did lose a fumble that helped Arizona to their early lead. Both of his touchdowns were caught by Steve Smith who had 117 yards on just 5 catches that included a 65 yard reception after breaking a tackle right on the sideline and running the rest of the way. DeAngelo Williams ran for 108 yards and 1 touchdown on 17 carries as Carolina go top of the NFC South alone, and Arizona stay top of the NFC West with the other three teams becoming a non-factor this season.
Dallas Cowboys (5-3) 13-9 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-3) Dallas ended their miserable two-game losing streak with an unconvincing victory over Tampa Bay, where they picked up just 172 yards on offence as key penalties from the Tampa defence and a lack of conviction inside the red zone from their offence helped Dallas get back to winning ways. Roy Williams, now known as Roy E. Williams in Dallas following his trade from Detroit caught the only touchdown in this game, and only 1 other pass that gave him 10 yards on the day. They are his total stats after two appearances for Dallas. Brad Johnson remained at quarterback whilst Tony Romo recovers from a broken finger.
Detroit Lions (0-7) 17-25 Washington Redskins (6-2) A good game from both Jason Campbell and Clinton Portis sent Detroit to their seventh successive defeat of the season as things don’t appear to be getting any better for the Lions. They put up just 57 rushing yards; less than half of what they allowed as Clinton Portis carried the ball 24 times for 126 yards. Santana Moss put in a star performance as he caught 9 passes for 140 yards and 1 touchdown and returned a punt 80 yards to the endzone after making several defenders miss. Jason Campbell has still yet to throw an interception in all 8 games so far this season.
Miami Dolphins (3-4) 25-16 Buffalo Bills (5-2) Miami handed Buffalo only their second defeat of the season as they keep their season intact with a must-needed victory. They were helped in the fourth quarter by the Bills turning the ball over in each of their four drives and conceding a safety. Joey Porter was responsible for the safety and earlier a fumble recovery after snatching the ball out of Trent Edwards’ hands. He had 4 tackles and 2 sacks on the day. Chad Pennington had a good game at quarterback for Miami, completing 22/30 for 314 yards and 1 touchdown. Tedd Ginn Jr had a career high 7 catches and 175 yards as he shows signs of becoming a good receiver in the NFL after being the ninth overall pick of the 2007 draft.
New England Patriots (5-2) 23-16 St Louis Rams (2-5) Jim Haslett’s mini revival in St Louis ended with a narrow defeat in New England. Antonio Pittman put up a respectable 83 yards on 19 rushing attempts in his first career start in place of Steven Jackson who was out with a strained right quadriceps. Marc Bulger threw for 301 yards; 163 yards went to Donnie Avery on 6 catches, 1 for a touchdown after the rookie had been looking good the past few weeks he had his breakout game. Randy Moss has 102 yards on 7 catches as Matt Cassel throws him the ball more and more each week now. Rams rookie defensive end and overall number 2 draft pick Chris Long doubled his number of sacks for the season with 2 in this game. The Patriots have now caught up with the Buffalo Bills in the AFC East as they lost in Miami on Sunday.

New York Jets (4-3) 28-24 Kansas City Chiefs (1-6) Despite losing the turnover battle 3-0, the New York Jets came away with the victory in this one to keep their impressive start to the season going. Brett Favre was responsible for all of those turnovers, throwing 3 interceptions (2 to Brandon Flowers), but his 2 touchdowns were enough for victory. Leon Washington’s one handed catch was responsible for one of those and he also scored on a 60 yard run, the Jets’ only big run of their 135 rushing yards on 24 carries, despite Tennessee putting up 332 rushing yards last week against the Chiefs. Jerricho Cotchery caught 9 passes for 102 yards for the Jets, whilst Dwayne Bowe had the same yardage on 6 catches. Bowe is one of the very few Chiefs bright points this season.
Philadelphia Eagles (4-3) 27-14 Atlanta Falcons (4-3) Philadelphia remain bottom of the NFC East despite a victory here that sends them to 4-3. Donovan McNabb became the 8th quarterback in NFL history to rush for over 3,000 yards in his career during this game, as he also got into the endzone on a 3 yard run. Brian Westbrook returned after missing Philadelphia’s victory over San Francisco two weeks ago and had his best game so far this season with 167 yards on 22 carries and 2 touchdowns. Roddy White is having another good year for Atlanta, catching both of Matt Ryan’s touchdown passes in this game on 8 catches for 113 yards in defeat.
Jacksonville Jaguars (3-4) 17-23 Cleveland Browns (3-4) Cleveland Browns picked up their third victory in four games with an upset in Jacksonville. Derek Anderson completed 14/27 for 246 yards and 1 touchdown and Jamal Lewis added 81 yards and 1 touchdown on 20 carries. A key moment in the game was Brian Witherspoon’s fumble on a kickoff return with less than five minutes remaining. Cleveland only turned this into a field goal and a six point lead but they managed to hang on as David Garrard couldn’t complete a pass into the endzone. Garrard was Jackonville’s leading rusher with 59 yards on 7 carries. Both of these teams are third in their division and realistically only a wildcard place seems possible for them now.
Houston Texans (3-4) 35-6 Cincinnati Bengals (0-8) Houston recorded the biggest victory in their history as the Bengals of old continue their winless season and lie bottom of the NFL. Matt Schaub had a career high quarterback rating of 144.0 after completing 24/28 for 280 yards and 3 touchdowns. Andre Johnson had his fourth successive 100+ yard game but still only had 2 touchdowns this season. His team mate Kevin Walter caught 2 touchdowns alone in this game on 5 completions that went for 70 yards; one after getting to his feet after going untouched despite a Bengal defender nearby. Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Cincinnati offence couldn’t get anything going on offence and he was intercepted twice.
Pittsburgh Steelers (5-2) 14-21 New York Giants (6-1) The New York Giants came from behind in the fourth quarter to win in Pittsburgh. Eli Manning had a mistake-free game and his 2 yard touchdown pass was their only touchdown of the game and was the winning score. Ben Roethlisberger threw 4 interceptions in this game as the Steelers lost the turnover battle 4-0. Mewelde Moore put in another good performance as he ran for 84 yards and 1 touchdown on 19 carries. The New York Giants remain the favourites to win the Superbowl at 5/1 as they top the NFC.
San Francisco 49ers (2-6) 13-34 Seattle Seahawks (2-5) Despite gaining over 100 yards more on offence, San Francisco were thrashed and overtaken by the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC West. Seneca Wallace had a mistake-free day at quarterback in his second start this season with Matt Hasselbeck out with a back injury that may keep him out for the rest of the season. New head coach Mike Singletary dropped J.T. O’Sullivan at half time after turning the ball over on a fumble and an interception that left the 49ers trailing 20-3 at half time. His replacement Shaun Hill avoided turnovers and threw a touchdown to Jason Hill, but it was too little, too late. Frank Gore had 159 all purpose yards but never got the ball into the endzone. Full back Leonard Weaver had 2 rushes for 13 yards and 4 catches for 116 yards and 2 touchdowns. Seattle won despite only 39 rushing yards. Rocky Bernard had 2 sacks for Seattle in this game.
Monday 27th October 2008 Tennessee Titans (7-0) 31-21 Indianapolis Colts (3-4) Tennessee go four games clear of the AFC South and 2 games clear of the AFC with an impressive victory at home to the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts did lead 14-6 during the third quarter in this game, but 25 unanswered points from the Titans gave them victory and hopefully a bit more respect than they were getting before kickoff. Kerry Collins managed the game well as always, whilst LenDale White got the job done inside the 5 as he scored 2 touchdowns on 10 carries despite only gaining 13 yards. Chris Johnson added a touchdown late on to seal the deal on his way to 77 yards on 19 carries. The Titans have allowed just 2 sacks in their opening 7 games. Peyton Manning looked like he was settling in at some point during the first half but couldn’t get it done in the second half as he finished 26/41 for 223 yards and 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Both his touchdowns were caught by Dallas Clark, his first of the season as he gained 94 yards on 7 catches, whilst Chris Hope made both interceptions, the second one sending Tennessee on their way to victory.
Bye week: Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings

Titans face a good team next week as i said on the forum. I think Miami and Cleveland were the most best this weekend, not many upsets
