Sunderland v West Ham Premier League preview

Sunday 23rd November
Sunderland v West Ham

Fresh off their first clean sheet of the season and first clean sheet since their 1-0 win at Fulham in February, West Ham travel to Sunderland this weekend, one of the lowest scoring teams in the Premier League.

Sunderland ended their three game losing streak with a victory at Blackburn last weekend thanks to second half goals from Kenwyne Jones and Djibril Cisse. This result catapulted Sunderland out of the relegation zone and up to 11th in the table and win again this weekend would see them pull further away from the relegation zone of which they are only 2 points away from before this weekend. Craig Gordon has been out of action for over a month and looks unlikely to play this weekend with an ankle injury. Marton Fulop continues to play in goal. George McCartney didn’t play last weekend or midweek but could return here to face his former club, alongside Anton Ferdinand who has played well this season. These two both left West Ham for Sunderland towards the end of the transfer window and lead to Alan Curbishley’s resignation.

West Ham have scored just twice in their last five games and have just picked up two points from their last seven games and they’ve slipped into the bottom half of the table and now only one point out of the relegation zone. West Ham supporters saw Matthew Upson and Craig Bellamy score for their home nations on Wednesday night and will be hoping they can do the same for their club this weekend. Craig Bellamy has struggled with injuries this season but is back now to add to West Ham’s attacking options with Dean Ashton and Diego Tristan out. West Ham still have quite a few players out injured, but Scott Parker and Valon Behrami have recently recovered.

Sunderland won this fixture 2-1 last season after losing 3-1 at Upton Park.

Sunderland to win 6/5
