Portsmouth v Hull Premier League preview

Portsmouth v Hull

Two teams on a bad run of form meet at Fratton Park on Saturday as Hull try to extend their excellent away record in the Premier League at Tony Adams’ Portsmouth.

Portsmouth have just one win under Tony Adams so far, and one win in their last six Premier League games. They are in need of a change in form and this weekend they have a good opportunity to turn things round as they face a Hull side in bad form of their own. Jermain Defoe was substituted at half time for England on Wednesday night with a tight calf but should be fit for this game, whilst Lassana Diarra is a doubt after limping off with an ankle injury at West Ham last weekend, but Portsmouth are hopeful he will be fit in time for this one. He is a vital part of their team as they have depended on him and Peter Crouch for goals this season.

Hull broke their three game losing streak with a 2-2 draw against Manchester City on Sunday. Geovanni scored the equaliser with a deflected free kick; another goal from him outside the 18 yard box this season as he finally starts living up to the potential he showed many years ago. Their reputation for closing opposition down quickly and not giving them much space lead to a string of three consecutive clean sheets, but that’s been blown apart in recent weeks having conceded ten goals in their last four games. Hull’s recent form has had an affect on the players as they looked a bit short of confidence on Sunday. But if they go into this game optimistically they have an opportunity to grab something from it against a Portsmouth side who are on poor form of their own.

Portsmouth players will have their minds on the glamorous tie with AC Milan on Thursday night which could play a factor in this game. Portsmouth only won one of six games in the league after beating Manchester United in the FA Cup semi final last season.
