2018 World Cup: France vs Belgium prediction

The first of the semi-finals takes place on Tuesday with many dubbing this as the real final, that the winner will go on to win the 2018 World Cup.

After a tame group stage France have exploded into action in the knockout stage with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Argentina in the second round and then 2-0 against fellow South Americans Uruguay in the quarter-finals.

Didier Deschamps had received much criticism heading into the tournament but I think France look like the best of the final four right now.  Kylian Mbappe is looking unplayable at times whilst Antoine Griezmann is getting among the goals and delivering a good set piece too.

Belgium too are flying since the final 20 minutes of their second round victory over Japan where they scored three goals to win 3-2.  Roberto Martinez’s side then beat favourites Brazil 2-1 in the quarter-finals, though were hanging on a bit in that second half.

The likes of Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku give Belgium a great counter-attacking threat which could hurt this French defence that shipped three goals against Argentina.

France do have a solid centre-back pairing of Samuel Umtiti and Raphael Varane who aren’t going to get beat for pace and do have N’Golo Kante sitting in front of them.

Belgium will be without the suspended Thomas Meunier and don’t have great protection in front of their back four with Axel Witsel and potentially Marouane Fellaini.  Griezmann and Paul Pogba could well take advantage of that.

This should be an entertaining game and I favour favourites France to reach the final.  The odds are much better than I was expecting.
