Manchester City have the opportunity to win the 2017-18 Premier League title in front of their rivals on Saturday with a victory over Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium.
The Citizens head into the weekend’s fixtures with a commanding 16-point lead over their neighbours and only seven games left to play. Victory would not only mean lifting the trophy but in record time.
Pep Guardiola’s are on course for a century of points and can reach a maximum of 105 having only drawn three and lost one of their 31 games so far.
However, Manchester City head into the weekend’s game off the back of a 3-0 humiliation at Liverpool in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie on Wednesday. The second leg is to come on Tuesday.
As a result, City’s odds have already started to drift so I recommend laying them long before the weekend as I wouldn’t be surprised if they went up to evens or odds against, particularly when the lineups are confirmed an hour before kick-off.
With the Premier League title all-but sewn up I expect Guardiola to rest a number of his stars with Tuesday night in mind – as the Champions League has to be the priority from here.
Sergio Aguero could return and I think he’ll at least be introduced as a substitute to get some game time under his belt before facing Liverpool. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a number of stars like David Silva, Leroy Sane, Vincent Kompany and maybe even Kevin De Bruyne, rested on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho will certainly be wanting to delay Manchester City’s title celebrations and having been beaten at Old Trafford earlier in the season, will not want Guardiola to become the first manager to do the double over him in the Premier League.
United have a couple of defensive injuries but no new concerns so Mourinho should already know what team he’ll be fielding at the Etihad, and he’s had a whole week to prepare whilst City were playing midweek.
