Harry Redknapp 4/9 to be Next Permanent England Manager
With Fabio Capello resigning as England manager on the same day Harry Redknapp has been cleared of tax evasion, the Tottenham boss is the bookmakers odds-on favourite to replace the Italian ahead of Euro 2012.
Harry Redknapp took Tottenham from bottom of the Premier League to Champions League is less than two seasons, and looks on course to qualify Spurs for next season’s most prestigious club football tournament; 8 points ahead of fifth place Newcastle and 7 points ahead of fourth place Chelsea.
England have just one game between now and the end of the Premier League season; a friendly with the Netherlands in three weeks’ time. A short-term replacement for Capello is an option for the FA here.
Luka Modric has been heavily linked with a move away from the club; both Gareth Bale and Rafael van der Vaart hot property too. The club failed to bring Emmanuel Adebayor in permanently with his wage demands being a stumbling block, suggesting Tottenham don’t have the money to compete year-in year-out for Champions League football, with the lack of opportunities to bring in the top talent on the market.
Current England under 21 manager Stuart Pearce is the 7/1 second favourite, despite his side disappointing and performing unimpressively in last summer’s European under 21 championships. Pearce’s side were eliminated at the group stage following a late 2-1 defeat at the hands of Czech Republic.
Guus Hiddink is the bookmakers third favourite despite turning the job down previously. The former PSV Eindhoven, Real Madrid and Chelsea manager is currently out of a job. However, the FA have previously said Capello would be replaced by an Englishman.
Strangely, Jose Mourinho has been made fourth favourite despite denying interest last time the job became available when he was out of work. The current Real Madrid manager is looking to become the first to win the Premier League, Serie A and La Liga by guiding the Spanish side to the title this season. Mourinho has also stated in the past that he wants to stay in club management and his only national job would be Portugal.
Roy Hodgson and Alan Pardew are both 14/1 with BetFred.
